I didn’t get to see every film I wanted to. But among those I did see, here’s the cream of the crop. (And music albums too!)
Time again for my annual list of favorite films and albums from the past year!
On the film side – I saw three great dramas that were better than Dune. YMMV, but all of these are fantastic films.
Favorite Films of 2021
- The Power of the Dog (dir. Jane Campion)
- Minari (dir. Lee Isaac Chung)
- Belfast (dir. Kenneth Branagh)
- Dune (dir. Denis Villeneuve)
- The Rescue (dir. Jimmy Chin & Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi)
On the music side – many of you know I have eclectic tastes. All of these are exemplary, genre-bending records. (Oh yeah – and all five of these artists are from the UK!)
Favorite Albums of 2021
- Wolf Alice – Blue Weekend (alternative/rock)
- Arlo Parks – Collapsed in Sunbeams (indie pop/r&b/soul)
- Floating Points, Pharaoh Cooper, & The London Symphony Orchestra – Promises (jazz/classical/electronic)
- Delta Sleep – Spring Island (indie/math rock)
- Nubiyan Twist – Freedom Fables (afro-jazz/soul/r&b)
